Kevin's Wisdom Tips

One Prayer

God Make Us Unreal

In our culture, it’s common to hear people take pride in saying “I’m just being real.” We are a culture that values “just being yourself.” But what if you’re “real” is rude, immature or selfish? What if your “being yourself” is arrogant, angry or lazy? Should you stay true to yourself if your self is your own worst enemy? Sometimes “being real” compromises the ultimate plan that God has for us.

“You were taught, with regard to your former life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires...” (Ephesians 4:22).

1. There’s a new and better you than the natural you.
“Being real” is overrated. People are addicted to drugs because they were “just being real.” Marriages end in divorce by people who were just being themselves. Thoughts are like trains -they take us somewhere! God wants us to think better thoughts and to be “made new in the attitudes of our minds,” (Ephesians 4:23).

2. The new and better you is the you that is created to be like God.
“Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” This “put on” is a process that God calls all of us to. When prayer, reading the Bible or going to church doesn’t fall into “just being yourself,” I pray, “God make us unreal!”

3. Becoming the new and better you includes a process called “authentic imitation.”
We’re called to imitate Christ, putting on our “new selves” even if it feels awkward at first. Putting on the new self means forming new and better habits.
